Wills: Did You Know?
I always arrange a Will for clients as I see this as part of their protection.
We all know that protection policies should be arranged in Trust unless there is a good reason not to and that’s a question I always ask when taking instructions for a Will as this impacts on what is going to be left to whom.
Clients usually see the benefits of arranging the policies in Trust. At the same time it gives both myself and the client a chance to have a look at the policies they have in place to make sure they are fit for purpose.
Increasingly I come across partners who are in long term relationships with children but have no intention of getting married.
In one particular instance, the clients had been together for 14 years and had two children together. Ironically, though, the biological father had no automatic parental responsibility on the older child so we had to specify him as a Guardian for the child if something happened to the mother. It came as a shock to the clients to discover that. At the same time we organised Guardianship Insurance to provide financially for the Guardians to help with the children’s upkeep.
It’s amazing what crops up when you arrange a Will for clients and the potential problems it solves.
